This is a really easy way to enhance your headers.
Start with a document size that fits your site, we'll use 700px wide x 140px High.
Click twice on the Background layer press "OK" to make it a working layer.
now open the layer styles window for this layer. (click twice on the layer, or select "Layer-Layer Style-Blending options" from the pull down menu at the top.
